SECRETS AND WHITE LIES

by Jack Howard

/
1.
Once I tried to find a way back home All I needed was the key to turn the stone I jettisoned cheap regret and all those stupid lies This endless maze you wander blind One fine day, you seek and you will find First, you crawl and then you run Then you learn to look out for number one Then the numbers start to turn And a simple twist of fate begins to burn So far astray, you wonder why One fine day, you seek and you will find

I float like ice down muddy streets Blow this sinking world apart piece by piece Looking for a dollar, looking for a clue Wonder what the hell is going on inside this zoo It's time to kick the crust off these feet of clay Time to make my way down the great white way Preachers at my door Salesmen by the score I blow them all away Let nature know the score Look for every crack to burn down the maze Wonder the hell I'm going blinded by this haze It's time, etc.

Then she emerged from the bedroom Tall and shining in the light She wore her green dress and her Italian shoes And her Evening In Paris perfume She kissed me hard upon the lips Took my hand and said we're staying in tonight We're going to the places where we used to go Before the fear of flying tied you to the ground Then she took me by the hand She led me to the places where we used to go Then she led me by the hand And we danced to tune that we used to know Around and around and around we whirled Around and around and around Then the fear of flying, etc. Well, you can trust a prince You can't trust a princess Well, you're no prince anymore anyway, just be my man Don't let that fear of flying, etc.

RESTLESSNESS 06:08
She wakes at two in the morning Climbs silently out of bed Avoids the creaks in the floor so as not to wake the dead She stands naked in the kitchen Framed in that cold and steaming light Her brain spins like a mouse on a wheel But neither food nor drink nor love Can cure that endless restlessness There's nothing but infomercials and christians on tv So she comes and stirs me awake with her expert hands Oh such excellent kisses, such sweet surprise She loves me in stealth like a thief in the night But neither food, etc. I still hear those echoing footsteps Clear and stark in the hallway

The beer-coloured bay smells oh so sweet And the wandering sickness is nigh The open sea's like a siren call And the world bids a fond goodbye Now you perch upon her temper And you yap for her return And you sail upon her smile The map of all those mean streets You used to know so well Is not forgotten, nor forgiven But hope springs eternal in this house, baby And the endless search has not been in vain Now you perch, etc.
8.
Come into my room and I will turn the lights down low Dry martini, Bacharach, an easy evening glow The conversation slides along, we seek each other's souls Closer and closer on the couch, the temperature rises Telling secrets and white lies Oh so sensitive Accidentally spill my drink Slip into something more comfortable As the night begins to fall, our words begin to fail My fingers through your hair Making love like there's no tomorrow And no yesterday I feel so lucid, so alive The lights of the city down below, leave the riff-raff far behind Making love like there's no tomorrow And no yesterday Telling secrets and white lies

HOME 03:26
It's so late and I don't have a car Oh so late and home is oh so far Now I will sit here underneath this bridge I'll watch the trains go by Just me and my foolish pride I would hate to bore you with my tale But since it's late and since you're in no state To refuse, I'll bend your drunken ear I'll buy you one more beer Just me and my foolish pride Oh but home is not as far as it seems Home is never as far as it seems. I only have one sorry tale to tell If I tell it over and over, I might tell it well Now I will sit here underneath this bridge I'll watch the sun rise high Just me and my foolish pride Oh but home, etc.

about

Secrets And White Lies was released in 2001 through Stuart Coupe's Laughing Outlaw Records. Locally, it became a bit of a legend in its own lunchtime. (An intense fellow named Mike bought it and promptly played it 47 times on repeat - full on!)

It was around this time that the first proper version of my solo bands began and started gigging regularly around town - at The Rosstown in Carnegie and the Elwood RSL in particular. I used to joke that the album was ideal for that recently separated uncle; and in fact, it did come hard on the heels of my own marriage break up. A shit time but we live and learn (theoretically).

My great pal and musical compadre Rob Hirst wrote the liner notes for the record so I'll leave it to him -

"Secrets And White Lies" is a powerful showcase for ex-Hunters and Collectors' hornsmith and vocalist Jack Howard. It combines angular guitar riffs, melodic brass themes, hammond swells, a great rhythm section and compelling lyrics which are often deeply personal and clearly heart-felt.

There's an intensity and dynamic range here which is not for the faint hearted and which often belies the cool of the grooves - whether it be the country pop of "Heard You Cry" with its Jimmy Webb-esque arrangement or the bluesy twang and walking bassline of "Break That Spell".

You can hear Jack's contribution to H & C in "Fear Of Flying" driven as it is by the trademark guitar/floor tom mid-tempo pulse, followed by the brassy chorus sung by a passionate man. Believe In this."
