about

Jack Howard has had his Prince moment with his latest release, the beautiful 6-track EP, The Passing Parade.
Performed, produced, programmed and written by Jack, it’s at once familiar yet full of new sounds and voices.

Jack’s long-time compadre, Nicky Del Rey, features with typically brilliant and inventive guitar and Heather Michael (from Jack's Bacharach band) adds some divine backing vocals; but the rest is all Jack - the rich voice and trumpet, the subtly arranged horns, the big choruses.

The opening track, A Foggy Night, starts with the swirling sound of four reverb-soaked flugel horns from which emerge a simple electronic beat and twisted guitars. The words tell a tale of late night yearning and empty freeways.

Six tracks - from the anthemic Simple Men and the drama of Don’t Freeze Me Out - and Jack continues to offer up high-quality, engrossing, genre-free music.

Jack Howard has been making music all his life. From the early days of playing in orchestras and musicals to the great adventure of Hunters and Collectors; from performing with Rodriguez, Midnight Oil, The Living End and You Am I to jumping up at the local bar on most weekends around St. Kilda; from releasing CDs with his mighty band, The Long Lost Brothers and his great Bacharach outfit to being the go-to trumpet man for shows all over town, Jack has covered an enormous amount of musical ground.

Track Name: A FOGGY NIGHT
A foggy night, the endless freeway
The empty freeway, almost alone
The gig is over, somebody's party
Everyone's dancin', havin' a good time

Home to my darling, straight and true
Two in the morning, indigo blue

The moon is risen, the streets are misty
Back streets of Brunswick, silent and cold
Sort out some music for the long drive home
The new Kurt Vile is mesmerising

Home to my darling, straight and true
Two in the morning, indigo blue

Patterns are merging, white line it flows
Like an autobahn, like a ship at sea
Track Name: SIMPLE MEN
Simple men need simple themes
Simple lives, simple dreams
Get a job, take a pretty wife
Pave your way to a better life
One, one plus two, two plus three, three plus four
Must be more

Grand illusion, time is slipping away
Blind delusion, the earth is spinning round and round

Seeds of doubt start creeping in
Open doors start closing
Look around, the kids have grown
Father, husband, carpenter but what lurks within?
One, one plus two, two plus three, three plus four
Must be more

Grand illusion, time is slipping away
Blind delusion, the earth is spinning round and round

Make a will, plan your death
A stack of unpaid bills steals your last breath
The wind it blows, the sun it shines
Birds are singing out beyond the power lines

Grand illusion, time is slipping away
Blind delusion, the earth is spinning round and round
Track Name: DON'T FREEZE ME OUT
I'm laying here missing you
Something's gone astray and I don't know what to do
Another messy weekend
Just passing nods across a crowded room
Hey, did you watch the game and how was your dad?
Watch a movie, write a song, get some sun, pass the time
Til I see you again

Don't freeze me out, don't take me down
It's just a misunderstanding

Walking round the house but I don't get far
You're always on my mind
In the mirror, start to shave
Behind the simplest tasks, you're always there
Why don't you just come around?
Why don't you just call me up?

Don't freeze me out, don't take me down
It's just a misunderstanding
Track Name: ONE WORD
The local saloon, the passing parade
Eyes on the prize, hopes start to fade
Feeling no love, feeling no pain
Glasses are raised, no need to explain

Stand up the back, watch what goes on
Don't get involved, don't come on too strong
They've hurt you before, no need for trust
Keep your trap shut, don't give them a crust

One word is all it takes
One word, a heart can break
One move, you've come so far, it's give and take

Heart starts to beat, words start to slur
Follow her down, the lights are a blur
One kiss, it's so close, as the music plays on
Just one more wine, the night's getting long
Last drinks are served, time's running out
Make your move now, but where do you start?
Everyone's gone, the sun starts to rise
Wasting away, your eyes on the prize

One word is all it takes
One word, a heart can break
One move, you've come so far, it's give and take

Sleep through the day, keep to yourself
Time all heals all wounds, you've only yourself
A vague sense of unease, a strong sense of guilt
Follows you round, a fortress is built

One word is all it takes
One word, a heart can break
One move, you've come so far, it's give and take
Track Name: CITY LIGHTS
Man, look at those city lights
Far above the trestle bridge
And the foggy form of Eureka
Are we feeling lucky tonight?
The planes land silently
And the ghosts of ANA boys
The dirt bikes rust in the creek below
Where in the hell does that train line lead anyway?

City lights, city lights, far away

Down there, first kisses
And jokes I never understood
Down there, small moments of glory
Etched like a turning point in the epic novel of my life
The novel of my life

City lights, city lights, far away

The distinctive beauty
And the unforgettable sound
Of an HD Holden going past
Ah, sweet memory, blast me from my sleep

City lights, city lights, far away
Track Name: BALL OF CONFUSION
Ball of confusion, the power of one
Truth or illusion, don't stare at the sun
The cards are stacked, the aces are high
This game is for losers, it's do it's die

Keep you chin up, it's not a perfect world
Let your guard down, it's not a perfect world

Morning has broken, the table is set
Guests are arriving, feeling okay
Conversation is flowing, it's all going well
Time to relax, it's not heaven or hell

Keep you chin up, it's not a perfect world
Let your guard down, it's not a perfect world

Out in the backyard, the evening is warm
Nerves start to twitch, so true to form
Find an excuse, say your goodbyes
You long for escape, you wish you know why

Keep you chin up, it's not a perfect world
Let your guard down, it's not a perfect world
